Chime from the Cathedral

HUBLOT 2015 Workshop - Extraordinary Auditory Feast

King Power Cathedral Tourbillon Minute Repeater Column Wheel Chronograph

Hublot is presenting a world first, with a minute repeater watch featuring two “cathedral” type gongs, a tourbillon and column wheel chronograph, with carbon fiber bridges, in a case made from carbon fiber in 2011. This is a perfect illustration of “Fusion” between great watchmaking tradition and the technology of the future

It is a timepiece with a sophisticated mechanism, featuring three major Haute Horlogerie complications particularly prized by connoisseurs and collectors, but revisited in a resolutely contemporary spirit: The main particularity lies in the fact that the three complications are visible from the dial side.

Besides the carbon fibre, the case is also fashioned with materials such as titanium and rubber, which is a perfect illustration of the Art of Fusion key to Hublot.
From a design point of view, the minute repeater bolt is ingeniously integrated into the King Power case middle, just like the chronograph control push-piece subtly integrated into the watch's crown. The minute repeater, activated by means of a lever situated between 8 and 10 o'clock, sounds the hours, quarter-hours and minutes. Its two “cathedral” gongs (one for hours and the other for minutes) are double the length of a regular gong. The whole design aims for a very uncomplicated overall effect for a piece of this level.

The manual-winding mechanical movement boasts a 5-day power reserve. The hour and minute indicator is situated centrally, for a conventional readout. The flying tourbillon – with suspended cage – is situated at 6 o'clock, and features an unusual structure of very high quality: indeed, the cage rotates without a ball bearing, and has a Swiss lever escapement.

Classic Fusion Cathedral Tourbillon Minute Repeater
Born of the desire to pursue an independent route enabling Hublot to design and produce its own movements, the brand has now unveiled its second Minute Repeater coupled with a tourbillon. Exhibiting a marvellous balance between the classic style of its two major complications, a symbol of watchmaking art, and the dynamic, modern design of the Classic Fusion 45 mm, this piece is a fine exercise in style that demonstrates the principle of fusion between Tradition and Modernity.

Entirely designed, developed and produced by the micro-mechanical engineers, engineers and watchmakers at Hublot, and this new Grande Complication is the result of 24 months of R&D. Fully remodelled and optimised since the first version appeared in 2010, the new Tourbillon Minute Repeater retains all of Hublot's DNA.

The sapphire dial reveals the HUB 8001 hand-wound mechanical movement, with its tourbillon escapement and the Minute Repeater mechanism. Among the notable new features are the newly designed time setting function and a traditional tourbillon with its 13.6 mm diameter cage, which rotates once every minute, and boasts a highly stable construction thanks to the barrette on the dial side.

The assembly of its 319 components - bridges, cams and springs, racks and hammers, gongs and snails, cage, wheels, jewels, screws - is a unique decorative element in itself, beautifully complemented by the watch's hands, which are 18K Gold 5N - or rhodium-plated, like the case.

One of the technical feats achieved on the Minute Repeater, whose construction requires a level of expertise possessed by only a small number of manufactures, is the complete integration of the trigger piece in the left-hand bezel lug of the Classic Fusion's case. This means it is no longer an appendage - as is usually the case - but rather a cleverly integrated function which results in a watch with a particularly harmonious appearance.

The power of the double cathedral chime and the exceptional clarity of its tone has already brought it to the attention of connoisseurs. Finally, the Tourbillon Minute Repeater, which has a power reserve of 5 days, is water-resistant to 30 metres - a highly complex achievement at this level, and much sought after by connoisseurs. The sound of the chime no longer relies on airborne transmission, but rather resonates through the material of the case.

The watch has an aesthetically pleasing diameter of 45 mm. The piece looks beautiful in King Gold (extra-precious gold containing 5% platinum) or titanium, the two versions in which this new model is available. It is completed with a strap, with a deployant buckle, in black alligator leather sewn onto tone-on-tone rubber for comfort, flexibility and increased leather durability.

Big Bang Alarm Repeater

Hublot is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its iconic Big Bang model by revisiting and bringing a spirit of innovation to one of its most practical complications – the alarm clock. Integrating one of the oldest complications – the alarm clock function preceded even the advent of hands – the Big Bang Alarm Repeater is the fusion of two functional complications: a mechanical alarm clock and a second time zone. This timepiece demonstrates the brand's maturity, highlighting how far it has progressed since the its manufacture was inaugurated in 2009. A fusion of tradition and modernity.

Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO, explains: "Several years ago, our objective was for Hublot to the join the ranks of the most prestigious brands by producing almost all new materials and our own movements (including complications) in-house. The Big Bang celebrates its 10th anniversary, and the accomplishment of all these objectives. The new developments for 2015 symbolise this achievement. The Big Bang Alarm Repeater is evidence of this. 2015 also sees the extension of our manufacture and, with it, many new objectives which we have set in terms of innovation, engineering and complications."

The alarm clock - a complication which belongs to the chiming clock category – is indexed on the reference time. At 1 o'clock, a triangular window gradually shows the day/night indicator for the local time. At 5 o'clock, a 24-hour counter with two hands shows the programmed alarm time; while an "on-off" indicator shows the alarm status at 6 o'clock. At 7 o'clock, the hammer visible under the sapphire is coated with SuperLuminova™ so it can be seen at night. The second time zone has a 24-hour display at 11 o'clock. The alarm clock chimes for around 16 seconds as a steel hammer strikes a gong.

The design of the Big Bang Alarm Repeater features a powerful case measuring 45.5 mm in diameter, reprising the characteristics of the case on the new Big Bang Unico models: six "H" screws, with an even more high tech, understated design, the design of the screw-in crown in overmoulded rubber, the edge of which is decorated with the famous "H" of the Hublot screw, round push-buttons protected by a button guard. The look of this piece distinguishes it from the chronograph versions: the push-button at 2 o'clock is used to adjust the time of the second time zone, while the push-button at 4 o'clock activates the alarm. All the other functions are easily operated using the crown.

The dial on the Big Bang Alarm Repeater features a complex, 3D architecture superimposing metal and sapphire – with a black metallic and fumé effect – through which the finishes of the movement can be admired.

The dial side of the anthracite ruthenium-coated movement features micro-blasted bridges, a circular-grained, satin-finished gong and a satin-finished hammer with polished angles, whilst the back alternates snailing, satin effect and circular graining finishes with polished angles. The skeleton work on the bridges, barrels and wheels is reminiscent of certain aesthetic codes on the Unico manufacture movement. The calibre comprises 356 components, a 72-hour power reserve and two barrels – one for the movement, the other for the chime. The alarm clock's power reserve indicator can be consulted via its skeleton barrel which reveals the spring.

The Big Bang Alarm Repeater model – available in titanium or King Gold – will be limited to 250 pieces; each is paired with a structured and ribbed natural rubber strap featuring an ingenious "One click" system for changing the strap.
