"The MP-08 Antikythera Sunmoon is a veritable link to the wisdom and knowledge of Greek antiquity"

A modern tribute to an ancient mechanism

Shrouded in mystery, the ancient mechanism was found in a shipwreck off the shores of Antikythera and dates back to 150 BC. The Antikythera mechanism served as an astronomical calculator as well as navigational tool, since the celestial bodies were often used as a reference point in navigation. The mechanism has the oldest known complex gear mechanism and is sometimes referred to as the first analog computer ever made.

A fruit of the ongoing collaboration between Hublot and the Antikythera Research team, the MP-08 Antikythera Sunmoon validates Hublot’s position as a haute horlogerie manufacture that is able to find inspiration beyond the annals of traditional watchmaking.

Housed in a square Titanium or King Gold case, the in-house developed and manufactured movement of the MP-08 Antikythera Sunmoon consists of 295 complications, with a number of original complications found in the ancient Antikythera mechanism including both solar and lunar calendars as well as the relative position of the sun and moon in the night sky.

Superior to the traditional moon phase indications found on watches, the Antikythera Sun Moon shows the shape of the moon in the sky, the name of the constellation behind the Moon, as well as the time required for the Moon to pass through a constellation. The watch also shows the constellation located behind the Sun and the time required for the Sun to pass through a constellation.

The movement also features a more traditional watchmaking complication in the form of a tourbillon escapement at the 6 o’clokc position of the dial. The manually wound movement provides a power reserve of 85 hours.

The display back shows the movement finished in matte and satin-brushed ruthenium, complete with a giant central gear made to resemble the front of the ancient mechanism.

Limited to just 20 examples, the MP-08 Antikythera Sunmoon is a veritable link to the wisdom and knowledge of Greek antiquity, as well as a watchmaking wonder in its own right.
