A laboratory of ideas

Turning ideas into realities, the Research & Development department is at the very core of Hublot’s most groundbreaking innovations.

The R&D department is responsible for the conceptualization of all the MP series pieces like the MP-02 Key of Time or the more recent MP-05 LaFerrari, bringing to life entirely new design codes and pushing Hublot’s manufacturing capabilities. These pieces often start as rough sketches, slowly evolving and taking form with input from the design team as well as the production department.

Movement conception and development also fall under the Research & Development department’s responsibilities. Whether it’s serially produced movements such as the Unico or Grand Complications in the MP series, the Research & Development department uses it’s extensive knowledge base and experience to overlook everything from the blueprinting and components design of the movement to the final surface finish and plating. Taking an idea from a rough sketch to a finished product, the Research & Development department develops working prototypes of such movements and tests them extensively before production can begin.

Another important role the R&D department plays is materials research. This is where the “Art of Fusion” slogan truly takes meaning, as the Research & Development department collaborates with the metallurgy department to create new high-performance alloys or improve on old ones such as the patented 18-karat scratchproof gold alloy “Magic Gold”.

The R&D team also works on the actual manufacturing processes involved with producing Hublot watches and components, constantly seeking innovative ways of machining components and enhancing traditional watchmaking methods through the latest in manufacturing technology.
